Here's What They Don't Tell You About Standby Generators

70% Fail When Called On

Industry data shows the majority of residential standby generators that haven't been serviced in 12+ months fail to start during an outage. The battery dies first. Then the fuel degrades. Then the controls drift out of spec.

Your Warranty Requires It

Most manufacturer warranties (Generac, Kohler, Briggs & Stratton, Champion) require documented annual maintenance by a certified technician. Skip it, and a $3,000 repair comes out of your pocket.

You Won't Know Until It Matters

The weekly self-test only runs the engine for 12 minutes with no load. It won't catch a weak battery, a failing transfer switch, or contaminated fuel. By the time you need it, it's too late.

That's why we built our Cornwall Care Plans.

What Happens During a Maintenance Visit

Most "annual inspections" are a 10-minute drive-by. Ours aren't. Here's everything we do on every single visit:

  • Change engine oil and filter (factory-spec synthetic)

  • Replace air filter as needed

  • Replace spark plugs as needed

  • Full battery test (load, voltage, CCA)

  • Transfer switch inspection and function test

  • Fault code scan and clear

  • Coolant level and condition check

  • Fuel system inspection (natural gas or propane line integrity)

  • Governor and voltage regulator check

  • Operational test run under simulated load

  • Exterior cleaning and enclosure inspection

  • Written report with photos — sent to your email

Every visit documented. Every report archived. Your service history is one call away — which matters when it's time to sell your home.
